hi vinay..hema here..now that i hav selected history & Public admin as my optional..i ll joining coaching in november (if possible). As I read History i feel diff to remember the dates ..how did you do it ..pls tell me it l be helpful.then one more doubt ,there are many amendments in our constitution ,how to remember all those.
Hi Hema. There are 2 approaches to learn dates 1) By keep looking at them again and again. Dont worry if forget them 100 times, revise it one more time. 2)You can always relate it to some incident like birthday of your friends/relatives. Say battle of Plassey was fought on 23rd July, 1757. I initially remembered it by relating it to one of my friends Birthday which is on 21st July. And year i related to 1857 war (100 years ago). I would suggest you not to get more worried about dates in particular. You dont need to learn them at the first go. By the time you will finish your history course you would automatically learn most of the dates. Just try to keep years of important happenings in your mind.
Regarding Amendments: First of all it is almost impossible to remember all the amendments. Infact its not worth spending that much effort on learning all of them. You should try to learn initially most important amendments. And I would suggest you if possible for you, try to get an idea of the situation as in why the important amendments were made. It will help you in understanding the amendments properly and also keep them in your mind for a long time.

Hi Avijit, Since this is my first attempt for mains, wont be able to help much from my personal experience. But i think the following experience of Umesh (RAnk 237) would be helpful.
I (Umesh agarwal)could score only 309 in 2007 mains where average GS score was around 330 ,though I got the interview Call .While preparing for my 2008 attempt I met Mr Ajit Sinha of Expert Brains and he advised me to follow the guidelines as prescribed by their Experts.
I judiciously followed the guidelines as prescribed by their Experts keeping in mind the concept of bounded rationality and by the grace of god , I scored 172 in paper 1 and 173 in paper 2 i.e., 345 ( highest - 353 ) ,where average GS score in 2008 mains was around 285.
My strategy in a nutshell :
History
I studied from Spectrum and Class 12th NCERT and for 2-markers i referred 'Up to the mark' and 2-markers given in the test series.
Polity
I studied from the Vajiram ' Yellow Book and supplemented it from class 12th NCERT i.e., democracy at work.
National Issues and Social Issues
I referred last one year Yojna , one year chronicle and Vajiram 'class notes
Geography
I didn't prepare at all.
International Relations
I referred one year chronicle and supplemented it with vajiram'class notes.
Economics
I referred India Year Book , Economic Survey,Uma Kapila ,and Vajiram class notes .
Science & Technology
I didn't study S&T and lost some marks in this section , hence i am unable to guide you for this section.
Statistics
I studied from S K Manocha's book and I practiced it in the same way as I would have to appear in my Mains keeping the time and graph paper along with the question papers.
I AM FROM AN ENGG BACKGROUND.I HAVE DECIDED TO TAKE PHY SICS AND MATH......AS MY OPTIONALS IN MAINS.BUT THERE IS NO COACHING AVAILABLE ON IN MY TOWN.I HAVE DECIDED TO GO THRUGH BUKS PRESCRIBED ON NET ....SHOULD I SHIFT TO DELHI OR OPT 4 COACHING FROM AN UNIVERSITY PROF....
I would suggest that you try to cover 2-3 topics in each subject in next 2 months and then try to solve questions asked from that portion in IAS mains. If you think you r comfortable solving them, then you can prepare at your hometown only else you can shift to delhi. University prof can be helpful but only if he/she has been in touch with IAS coaching. It is necessary that he/she knows the pattern of exam and type of questions asked in last years.
hi Vinay this is satyendra here, i have History(1st optional) and Pub Ad (2nd Optional) in my Prep. right now i am Going thru NCERT books of history and side by side wants to prepare for GS also. i have one doubt on Indian Economy portion of GS. which books should i refer as Datta and Sundaram books is the most preferred and recommended book but it has more than 50 chapters, and i have heard that only few chapters are imp. So please tell me what are the main topics to follow from that book or any other material.
hi vinay. how 2 select optional subjects. My interests towards History, Geography, Public Admin,Sociology. I am from computer science background. I couldn't decide what's best for me?.
Hi John. I would suggest you to take Pub Ad as one optional. Out of 3 History would be very helpful in GS portion both in mains n pre and also would give you a gud background about international relationship. But it is quite lengthy and also you need to have interest in this subject if you want to score good marks.
If you want to take subject which is more theory based then you can go for Geography.
@shruthi for prelim One Laxmikant's book is very helpful. and for mains
For Paper 1: 1. New Horizons of public administration by Mohit Bhattacharya 2. Administrative thinkers by prasad and prasad (theories part) 3. Public Administration by Sharma and Sadana (read administrative law, personnel administration, financial administration, development administration, comparitive administration and other paper-I topics) 4. IGNOU material (read public policy) 5. Public Administration by Avasthi and Maheshwari (read administrative law and administrative reforms)
For PAPER-II 1. Indian Administration by Rajini Goyal and Arora (covers most of the topics of paper II) 2. Public Administration by Avasthi and Maheshwari (read public sector) 3. Indian Administration by Avasthi and Avasthi (read administrative reforms, administration of law and order) 4. Introduction to the constitution of India by D.D.Basu and last but not least 5. Articles from IIPA Journals (aspirants can get Mr.Minocha’s collection of articles from IIPA Journals which is sufficient)
I WANTED 2 KNOW WHAT WE SHOLUD READ IN ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS.I AM NOT ABLE TO SEPARATE THE 2.PLEASE GIVE ME A LAYOUT PLAN SO THAT I CAN READ THEM THOROUGHLY .NAME THE SECTIONS IN THE NEWS PAPERS......ALSO TELL BOTH FOR PRE AND MAINS
Economics - Focus on Govt Policies (NREGA, NFSM, RKVY etc), Budget, Agriculture, Industry (Pratiyogita Darpan Economics edition would be very handy for prelims, Also try to go through Economic Survey twice)
Business - MOstly questions would be related to CEO/Chairman of companies, countries to which companies belong, if any merger has taken place read that also, this time in pre ques was asked on stock markets of different countries.
If you are appearing for pre next year then I would suggest you to go through the whole newspaper very thoroughly for atleast next 3 months. It would give you a fairly good idea about happenings both in INdia and world. After that you can just look at headlines of Business section and only read the articles which you find interesting and useful.
Hindu is enough for Economics part. Keep reading Competition Wizard also. To get a good understanding of issues I would suggest you to read Class XI Economics Book. You can also read TMH Guide Economics portion.
hi vinay, thanks for extending help to all of us. i am at present in first year of MA in social entrepreneurship at TISS, Mumbai.i also want to appear in next year preliminary. i want to take sociology and hindi lit as my optionals since i have a huge interest in socio, but my beckground is BSc elex. what u suggest to me? and plz give me details regarding books and preparation specially for pre. i want to crack in just one shot since i'll not have the next one. regards
Hi naveen, Before deciding on Sociology I would suggest you to go through last year papers. (for last year papers chk www.examrace.com). I hope there would be some portions which you would have covered as part of your MA syllabus, and if that is the case you can definitely opt for sociology.
Bt I would like to tell you one more thing that might help you while finalising your optionals. Since you would be taking SOciology and HIndi Lit. as your optionals, you would have to spend alot of time on your compulsory papers particularly sections on modern history, polity, economics and geography. There wont be much that you would be able to cover in your optionals. So keep that in mind also while finalising your optionals. Regarding preparations and books for GS i have already written in my previous blog. In case of any further query feel free to ask. All the Best..

HI I AM ANKITA nd m in my final year engineering..m confused that shud i appear for the ias exam 2010 because i have just started preparing ...i know it is late...but shud i still give a try this time...or sit for the2011 exam
hi ankita.. i think u can give it a try this year... bcoz still u have more than 5 months for prelims so u can prepare one optional and GS in this time.. n aftr prelims u can prepare ur second optional... bt while saying this i assume tat you would b able to dedicate full time to IAS prep in next few months. if tats not possible then u shud go for 2011 IAS...
@ Mayuresh... I know its too late to reply on your query.. I would suggest you to read IGNOU notes.. they are better than most coaching institutes notes..
Hello Vinay, this is Arvind from IIT Delhi..I heard that this year psyco, socio, and pub ad were much tougher than last year mains. You can say it better.I am yet to be decisive about my optional subjects. Can you kindly describe the relative toughness of these optional papers in relation to last year.looking forward to your response. thanks in advance
@ Arvind.. I am not sure about other but since Pub Ad was my optional. I would say this time since pattern was changes many people find it difficult but if you have prepared it well then it was not that tough. From this year what UPSC has decided is to cover almost all topics in optionals so the previous strategy of just preparing 10 topics well out of 15 wont work..
Also in Pub Ad in paper 2 they focused alot on current happening in Pub Ad in India
@ Mayuresh.. CLass notes means notes which are dictated by faculties to students who are taking coaching from vajiram.. Yellow book and Postal book are same.. if you will just have correspondance course from vajiram they will send you these yellow books... I hope it clarifies your doubt.. in case still you have some doubt feel free to ask tat..
Now about myself.I have completed my B.Tech. and currently am IAS aspirent. I have chosen history and Pol.Sci.&IR as optional.
Thank You for clarifing my doubt. I have more questions. 1:-As you say yellow books are indeed postal notes, I know how to get them. But still question remains how to get "Vaji class notes"?[Except ofcourse by joining there classroom coaching] 2:-Also can you please tell me how are these 'class notes' like?[I mean are they hand written or printed?bulky or brief?] 3:-If I could grab these 'class notes' can I get latest one or old ones[I ask this question, bcoz current events so IMP for GS] 4:-Are there any difference between "class notes"and"postal notes"? 5:-And lastly which one are better? waiting eagerly
As I live far from delhi. Will I get all LATEST class notes of vaji one time only from xerox shop or shall I have to update myself periodically with latest notes at the xerox shop?
@Mayuresh...Vajiram class notes basically means notes dictated by faculties to students in class... so they r hand written.. you can get them from some big xerox shops where few students sell their notes at the end of their course or selection.. bt you will have to spend some time to go thru them to make sure that they are not very old.. For History.. read IGNOU notes definitely for mains...
n for GS.. Vajiram yellow books r gud enough.. if you are listening to news and reading newspaper on a regular basis.. you wont have much problem in clearing pre...

I did my graduation from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. I completed my MBA from IIM Bangalore in 2007 and then worked for a year with GE Commercial Finance. I like teaching and currently work as a trainer with coaching institutes and guide students for interview preparation and GDs.
I am also preparing for IAS. I have cleared this year IAS pre and now preparing for mains (my first attempt). I am not an expert but would like to share my experiences which i think would be quite helpful for those who are preparing for IAS exam for the first time and have no one to guide them.

1.(a) International Politics —Bookhives
(b) Regular subscription of Frontline & World Focus (magazine)
Hi Avijit,
Since this is my first attempt for mains, wont be able to help much from my personal experience.
It is necessary that he/she knows the pattern of exam and type of questions asked in last years.
hi Vinay
this is satyendra here, i have History(1st optional) and Pub Ad (2nd Optional) in my Prep. right now i am Going thru NCERT books of history and side by side wants to prepare for GS also.
i have one doubt on Indian Economy portion of GS. which books should i refer as Datta and Sundaram books is the most preferred and recommended book but it has more than 50 chapters, and i have heard that only few chapters are imp.
So please tell me what are the main topics to follow from that book or any other material.
Thanks
satyendra
hi vinay. how 2 select optional subjects.
If you want to take subject which is more theory based then you can go for Geography.
hi vinay..could u pls suggests me the books for pub admin for both main and pre.
waiting for ur reply.
@shruthi
for prelim One Laxmikant's book is very helpful.
and for mains
For Paper 1:
1. New Horizons of public administration by Mohit Bhattacharya
2. Administrative thinkers by prasad and prasad (theories part)
3. Public Administration by Sharma and Sadana (read administrative law,
personnel administration, financial administration, development
administration, comparitive administration and other paper-I topics)
4. IGNOU material (read public policy)
5. Public Administration by Avasthi and Maheshwari (read administrative law and administrative reforms)
For PAPER-II
1. Indian Administration by Rajini Goyal and Arora (covers most of the
topics of paper II)
2. Public Administration by Avasthi and Maheshwari (read public sector)
3. Indian Administration by Avasthi and Avasthi (read administrative
reforms, administration of law and order)
4. Introduction to the constitution of India by D.D.Basu and last but not
least
5. Articles from IIPA Journals (aspirants can get Mr.Minocha’s collection of
articles from IIPA Journals which is sufficient)
THANX 2 ANSWER ING ECO SECTION BUT
1)PLEASE SPECIFY..........WHICH NEWSPAPER 2 READ .....IS HINDU SUFFICE OR ECONOMIC TIMES...IS NEEDED
2)PLZ TELL ABOUT.....ANY OTHER NCERT BUKS READ....
Hindu is enough for Economics part. Keep reading Competition Wizard also.
To get a good understanding of issues I would suggest you to read Class XI Economics Book. You can also read TMH Guide Economics portion.
hi vinay,
thanks for extending help to all of us.
i am at present in first year of MA in social entrepreneurship at TISS, Mumbai.i also want to appear in next year preliminary. i want to take sociology and hindi lit as my optionals since i have a huge interest in socio, but my beckground is BSc elex.
what u suggest to me?
and plz give me details regarding books and preparation specially for pre.
i want to crack in just one shot since i'll not have the next one.
regards
Hi naveen,
Before deciding on Sociology I would suggest you to go through last year papers.

HI I AM ANKITA nd m in my final year engineering..m confused that shud i appear for the ias exam 2010 because i have just started preparing ...i know it is late...but shud i still give a try this time...or sit for the2011 exam
hi ankita.. i think u can give it a try this year... bcoz still u have more than 5 months for prelims so u can prepare one optional and GS in this time.. n aftr prelims u can prepare ur second optional... bt while saying this i assume tat you would b able to dedicate full time to IAS prep in next few months. if tats not possible then u shud go for 2011 IAS...
hi,Can you tell me best coaching centre for history. better if they provide correspondence material
Hi Vinay , how are you ? When UPSC will start issuing form ?
Thanks
@ Mayuresh... I know its too late to reply on your query.. I would suggest you to read IGNOU notes.. they are better than most coaching institutes notes..
@ AVijit.. Sorry for replying so late.. UPSC has start issuing form from last week..
Also in Pub Ad in paper 2 they focused alot on current happening in Pub Ad in India
plz tell me difference between "Vaji class notes" "vaji postal course" "vaji yellow pages".
where to get each of them.
Plz reply ASAP.
thanks Vinay for your views and suggestion
plz tell me difference between "Vaji class notes" "vaji postal course" "vaji yellow book".
where to get each of them.
Plz reply ASAP.
Hi Vinay, last time I forget all manners and just went on asking my questions.Sorry for that.
First of all I will like to congratulate you for your success in CSP-2009.you must have appeared for mains exam. How did it go?
Now about myself.I have completed my B.Tech. and currently am IAS aspirent. I have chosen history and Pol.Sci.&IR as optional.
Thank You for clarifing my doubt.
I have more questions.
1:-As you say yellow books are indeed postal notes, I know how to get them. But still question remains how to get "Vaji class notes"?[Except ofcourse by joining there classroom coaching]
2:-Also can you please tell me how are these 'class notes' like?[I mean are they hand written or printed?bulky or brief?]
3:-If I could grab these 'class notes' can I get latest one or old ones[I ask this question, bcoz current events so IMP for GS]
4:-Are there any difference between "class notes"and"postal notes"?
5:-And lastly which one are better?
waiting eagerly
As I live far from delhi. Will I get all LATEST class notes of vaji one time only from xerox shop or shall I have to update myself periodically with latest notes at the xerox shop?
should the constitution book of dd basu be read from cover to cover
@Mayuresh...Vajiram class notes basically means notes dictated by faculties to students in class... so they r hand written.. you can get them from some big xerox shops where few students sell their notes at the end of their course or selection.. bt you will have to spend some time to go thru them to make sure that they are not very old..
For History.. read IGNOU notes definitely for mains...
n for GS.. Vajiram yellow books r gud enough.. if you are listening to news and reading newspaper on a regular basis.. you wont have much problem in clearing pre...

@Mayuresh.. you can get all the books in kamla nagar.. or kingsway camp
@Nisha.. since history is your optional.. making notes from NCERT is not necessary as you would be covering history in much details from other books.. FOr pre you dont need Romila thapar.. its good for mains for some sections..
